Hi all,
For the past two years I have been to Mallorca for a week in April for a cycling "holiday". Several people in the club have been asking me about the trip with a view to going out there next year (2018), so here's a bit of info on the gig.
The group I travel with are just a bunch of cycling friends that get together for the week for some cycling and a bit of craic. Some I know for years and others I don't know till we meet up in Cork airport.
The place we go is the "Stephen Roche Cycling Centre" based in the Ponent Mar Hotel in Palma Nova. stephenrochecycling.com/
The dates we will be traveling in April 2018 are from Friday 27th April-Friday 4th May (Inclusive).
The cost of the camp is approx. €850 for the week. At least that's what it was last time. Flights are booked separately (approx. €150).
So, what do you get for your buck!?
Airport transfers.
Half board accommodation in the Ponent Mar Hotel. Nice hotel, plenty of food and comfortable rooms.
Bike rental for the week. All full carbon fibre Pinarello bikes. Nice! You email your dimensions in advance and your bike is ready for you when you arrive. Just don't forget your pedals, shoes and helmet. Full bike garage support. Anything wrong with your bike you just tell the mechanic and its fixed overnight and ready for you next morning.
Guided daily rides. Ride captain at front and rear of each group. You go on roads you would never find yourself and no worries of getting lost. Different route every day. Lots of climbing!! Rides are usually between 90 and 110 kms long with approx. 1000m climbing daily. Full support on all rides. Car with mechanic and water/electrolytes etc. You don't even have to fix your own punctures, if you get one that is.
Groups are divided by cycling level. Elite- for serious racing cyclists. Sportive-which would be equivalent to our red group. Leisure-Orange Plus/ orange. Tourist-Orange/Yellow and Happy Group-if you want to just toddle along taking selfies. So there's a group for everyone. If you find yourself in the wrong group you can change up or down mid-ride (at the coffee stop).
Roll out is at 9am each morning and you return early afternoon. The afternoon is for chilling by the pool etc and dinner at 8ish with a slagging match and discuss tactics for the following day. The Irish table is usually the noisiest !
If you are interested in giving this trip a go, you would be more than welcome to join our extremely informal group. The more people we can get together as a group the better chance we have of negotiating a group discount. Any discount we negotiate will be spread across the whole group. No favourites or specials. Its not confined to CCC members either. If you have cycling friends/family outside the club that you think might be interested, bring em on.
If interested just post up "interested" so I can get a feel for numbers. All the booking arrangements will be done through the Stephen Roche Cycling office (I will not be doing any admin on this once we have set up the group and negotiated any group discount. All monies will be paid directly to Stephen Roche Cycling.
I'll leave it out there for a couple of weeks to see what the interest is like and go from there. We'd want to be booking around end of October (10% deposit) and flights as soon as possible. Ill let you know the flight details as soon as they are released.
So lets be having ye, all that are interested.
Cheers
Niall.
